Log Cabin Quilts

Did you ever take any quilting classes?  Well I never did till this last week.  I went with a friend of mine to another friends shop in Martin.

We had so much fun...the lesson was on the proper way to make the Log Cabin block.  Now, my first thought was, I made those blocks, they are easy.  But, I learned real quick, with the proper ruler, they are sooo much easier.

This ruler does all the calculating for you.   It not only will make the proper width you want but gives you the measurements for each strip.

There were only 6 of us so you know we got a lot covered .  We each got a book and ruler.  The book was "Log Cabin ABC's" by Marti Mitchell.

It is a great book with lots of ideas, patterns, and complete easy to read instructions.

Linda (our instructor) started by going over the first part of the book. Where the log Cabin block originated and how the center block is usually red (representing fire or heat inside your cabin), then picking fabrics.

Next, we all picked our fabrics and after being showed how to use the ruler, we cut the pieces out:

(Linda Deboard, our instructor/shop owner)

After we cut them out, we sewed them together.  So many ways to place them:

(We put 4 of our blocks together)

Linda Deboard has a beautiful little shop in Martin, TN called  Ellakates Quilt Shop .  You can find this ruler and book in her store.  She carries everything from fabric, rulers, patterns, threads, books, and much more.  Please, take the time to check her out.

Don't forget,
Mark your calendar,
March 13th is the

You are not going to want to miss this one..

So tell me, what class did you attend?

Till next time,

HAPPY QUILTING EVERYONE!!!!

That looks really interesting! I may have to check out this new method. Your different block arrangements look like fun.

I've taken several classses and always learn something new. Sometimes it's just a little thing but it's something that makes sewing easier. Log cabins are probably my favorite pattern. blessings,

I've never lived in a place where courses were available close by. I did take a course about using a rotary cutter many years ago - when they were a newish thing! Other than that I've extended my dressmaking skills into patchwork using books and now the internet!

Isn't that Log Cabin ruler terrific?? I've been using it for 7 or 8 years. I'm an educator for Marti Michell's tools and encourage you to try some more of them!! The Pineapple templates are just as much fun as the Log Cabin rulers!!
